Short answer: To convert GIF to JPG, drop the file above, choose JPG and click Convert. Animated GIFs keep only their first frame, and transparent areas become white unless you choose another color.

Sometimes you simply need a normal photo file from a GIF: a thumbnail for a post, a picture to print or a still to attach to an email. This page converts GIF to JPG inside your browser. Animated GIFs are reduced to their first frame, and transparent areas are filled with a color you choose, both of which are explained below so there are no surprises.

What changes in the conversion?

JPG is a format for photographs. It has no animation and no transparency, so two things happen. An animated GIF becomes a single still image from its first frame, and any transparent pixels are filled with the background color. The default is white, and Advanced options lets you pick something else so a logo with a see-through background looks right on dark pages.

When is it worth doing?

Use JPG for GIF stills when you need a smaller file, when a form accepts only JPG or when you want one frame as a preview. For graphics with flat colors and sharp edges, PNG is usually a better still format, because JPG can leave faint smudges around hard edges. For photographs saved as GIFs, JPG is often much smaller than the original.

Quality notes

A GIF has at most 256 colors, so photographic GIFs often look grainy. Converting to JPG does not fix that, since the grain is already in the picture. A slightly lower quality setting can hide some of it, but it will not recreate the lost shades. If the picture looks blocky after conversion, check the original GIF first, as the cause is almost always there.

Thumbnails and previews

A common use for this conversion is a preview picture for a blog post or a video page. Convert the GIF, then use the resize options to set a width that fits your layout, such as 800 pixels. Because only the first frame is saved, choose a GIF whose opening frame is a good representative image. Pick a background color that matches your page if the GIF has transparent areas. Keep the original GIF for the animated version, and use the JPG only where a still picture is needed.

Questions people ask

Does the JPG keep the animation?

No. Only the first frame of an animated GIF is saved.

What happens to transparent areas?

They are filled with white by default, or the color you choose in Advanced options.

Why does my picture look grainy?

GIFs use at most 256 colors, so photos often look grainy already. Conversion cannot restore the missing shades.

Why is the background of my GIF white in the JPG?

GIF transparency becomes the background colour you choose, white by default, because JPG cannot store transparent areas.

Is GIF to JPG a good idea for a meme?

Only if you need a still picture. The animation is lost, since only the first frame is kept. To share the moving version, keep the GIF.
