About ManyFormat

A converter that keeps your pictures on your device.

Who runs it

ManyFormat is an independent project, made and maintained by Tfq Mouad. It is not part of a larger company, and there is no big team behind it: one person builds the pages, tests the conversions with real files and answers the messages. If you write to me through the contact page, a real person reads it, and that person is me.

Why I made it

I made ManyFormat to help people change the format of their images, after a very long fight with exactly that problem myself. I know the feeling of a deadline, a photo that will not upload and a dozen websites that each want something from you first. Photos from a phone would not open on a computer, a form refused a picture because it was the wrong type, and every converter I tried wanted me to upload private pictures, create an account, wait in a queue or accept a watermark. Some quietly changed the colours or shrank the picture without saying so. I wanted one place where you drop a picture, pick a format and get the file back in seconds, without any of that. If ManyFormat saves you even one of those evenings, it has done its job.

How it works

When you drop a picture into ManyFormat, your browser reads it, converts it with open-source codecs compiled to WebAssembly, and hands the result back to you as a download. The file is never sent to a server. For several files the results are packed into a ZIP, also inside your browser. Because the work happens on your own device, the limits depend on it: computers can handle more and larger files than phones.

What I try to do differently

No sign-up, no watermark and no upload. The site also tells you plainly when a conversion loses something, such as turning transparent areas into a solid colour, keeping only the first frame of an animated GIF, or tracing a photo into simple shapes. Each tool page explains when to use that conversion and what to watch out for.

How the site pays for itself

The converter is free. The site shows a small number of clearly labelled ads, and any affiliate link is labelled as one. See the privacy policy for details.

Corrections and feedback

If a conversion looks wrong, or a guide on this site is unclear or mistaken, please tell me through the contact page. Every page shows the date it was last reviewed, and corrections are made as soon as they are confirmed.
