Short answer: To convert AVIF to JPG, drop the file above, choose JPG and click Convert. JPG opens in almost every program, though it is usually larger than AVIF. Your picture is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
AVIF is one of the newest image formats, valued for very small files at good quality. It is increasingly common on the web, but many photo editors, operating system viewers and upload forms still cannot open it. This page converts AVIF to JPG in your browser, so you can use the picture anywhere, and the file never travels to a server.
Why does AVIF exist?
AVIF is based on video compression technology and can deliver photos at a given quality using less data than JPG or even WebP. Websites adopt it to load faster. The cost is slower encoding and patchy support in older software, which is exactly why a saved .avif file often refuses to open in a program that handles JPG without trouble.
When should you convert?
Convert when you need to edit the picture in older software, attach it to an email, upload it to a site that checks file types, or print it at a shop. Keep the AVIF if you only view it in a modern browser, because it is the smaller of the two. After conversion the JPG will usually be larger, which is the normal price of compatibility.
Quality notes
Both formats compress with some loss, so the converted JPG is a fresh compression of the decoded picture. Use quality 85 or higher to keep it looking the same. Pictures with transparency become white-backed, since JPG cannot hold see-through areas, and you can change that color in Advanced options. High dynamic range information is flattened to standard colors.
If a website serves AVIF
Browsers receive AVIF automatically on many sites, so you may not even realise you saved one until a program refuses it. This is normal and not a sign of a broken file. Convert it here to a JPG for editing or printing. If you need the best possible quality for further work, choose PNG instead and accept the larger file. Whichever you pick, keep the AVIF itself if it came from your own site, because it is the smallest version and the one your visitors should keep receiving.
Questions people ask
Why will my AVIF file not open?
Many editors and viewers do not support this newer format yet. A JPG copy opens almost everywhere.
Will the JPG be bigger?
Usually yes. AVIF is very efficient, so a JPG of similar looks takes more space.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser and the file stays on your device.
Why did my AVIF take longer to convert than a JPG?
AVIF is a demanding format to decode, and ManyFormat does all the work on your own device. A few seconds per large picture is normal, especially on phones.
Where do AVIF files come from?
Mostly from websites, which use AVIF because it makes small files, and from some apps and devices that save in it. Wherever it came from, converting to JPG makes the picture open everywhere.
