Short answer: To convert ICO to PNG, drop the icon file above, choose PNG and click Convert. Transparent areas are kept. Icon files can hold several sizes, and your browser picks one when reading the file.

An ICO file is the little icon behind a website tab or a Windows program. If you want to use that icon in a document, edit it or place it in a design, a PNG is far easier to work with. This page converts ICO to PNG in your browser, keeps the transparent background, and does not upload anything.

What is inside an ICO file?

An ICO is a container that can hold several versions of the same icon at different sizes, from tiny sixteen-pixel versions to large two hundred and fifty-six pixel ones. Programs choose the size that fits. When a browser reads the file for conversion, it decides which of the sizes to use, so check the result and use the resize option if you need a particular dimension.

Why is PNG handier?

Almost every editor, document tool and website builder opens PNG, and it keeps the see-through corners that icons rely on. Converting lets you reuse a favicon in a presentation, send an icon to a designer or use it as a starting point for a new version. For a new favicon, you can convert the other way too, choosing the ICO output and the favicon preset.

Quality expectations

Icons are small by design, so a PNG made from a sixteen-pixel icon will be tiny and look blocky when enlarged. Converting cannot add detail that the icon never had. If you need a bigger, sharper version, ask for the original artwork from whoever made it, or redraw it as a vector graphic, which scales cleanly to any size.

Reusing a favicon

A frequent reason for this conversion is reusing a site's icon in a document or presentation. Convert it, then use the PNG at a small size, because enlarging a tiny icon makes it blurry. If you are building a new favicon, start from a large square PNG of at least 512 pixels, then convert it to ICO using the Favicon preset. Check how the icon looks on both light and dark browser themes, since transparent areas will show whichever colour sits behind them. Keep the source artwork somewhere safe for future changes.

Questions people ask

Which size does the PNG have?

ICO files can contain several sizes, and your browser picks one when reading the file. You can resize the result in Advanced options.

Does the PNG keep transparency?

Yes. The see-through areas of the icon are preserved.

Can I make an ICO from a PNG?

Yes. Choose ICO as the output format and the Favicon 32×32 preset for a favicon-sized icon.

My ICO holds several sizes. Which one do I get?

The browser decodes the icon and ManyFormat converts the image it reads, which is usually the largest one stored. Check the size of the PNG after converting.

Can I use the PNG as my profile picture?

You can, but icons are tiny, often 256 pixels or less, so they look blurry when shown large. Start from a bigger original when you have one.
